Why Some Children Struggle With Phonics

A child can know the alphabet song, recognise their favourite book, and still freeze when asked to blend `s-a-t`. That can feel confusing. Phonics looks simple from the outside, but it asks the brain to do several demanding things at once: hear tiny sounds, link them to letters, hold them in memory, and blend them into a word.

Segmenting is made harder by handwriting. While one part of the brain listens for sounds, another forms letters, remembers spacing, and keeps the word in mind. A child who struggles with handwriting may appear to struggle more with phonics during spelling tasks than during oral work.
